Instant gratification, as it relates to addiction. Is it really a feeling of gratification when your brain chemistry realigns to the that of an addict so that you don’t suffer withdrawal?

Can’t stop? Or Can’t stop once you start? Don’t start. That’s advice for the cg.

Hi Dave! Next week during the week in the morn and early afternoon the regular moderator should be here on and off. But keep checking in and sharing. Calling a hotline is the best in my opinion. It helped many times because it was someone to talk to and get information also. Take care of yourself.

If we or when we find ourselves with a large helping of challenges on our plates during recovery, what can we do with that mountain of stuff that we did not order? Maybe it’s some pretty intense and varied emotional situations with friends, family, work etc. Surely there are financial challenges awaiting any cg. Health issues? Often there are…[Read more]

Did you ever feel robotic while gambling? I think that feeling is surely ‘addiction’.

  • tara posted an update in the group Group logo of CommunityCommunity 1 month ago

If you or I feel badly emotionally and go to drown sorrows in a gambling exp. It only gets worse. If you or I feel optimal or are celebrating and we engage in gambling to stay on that high we fall down miserably left with nothing to celebrate. If you or I are compulsive gamblers, this is how it always will pan out.

There are other recovery groups that do not have a specific addiction focus such as smart recovery/ life ring/ celebrate recovery/ dharma punks/ etc. Youtube videos, workbooks, counseling , online sites like this, other 12 step programs such as Codependents anon. My experience has been that it is very hard to recover on our own.
Before you write off GA completely try some more meetings and try to be open minded. In my room we offer new members the GA refund policy’.We ask the new member to give us their pain and misery attend meetings and not gamble for 90 days. And if after the 90 days they aren’t happier…[Read more]

Most can not recover from compulsive gambling on their own. But there are other resources to piece together for yourself besides the full on GA meetings. It could take even more ‘work’ to find the connections but it’s worth the time and effort. I have found that I’ve got to ‘work’ this recovery. Self exclusions from casinos with the ‘lifetime…[Read more]

Can we/I continue to reinforce negative associations that we have with compulsive gambling addiction? Each time thoughts of gambling come to mind spend time fully remembering the negatives; the visuals (darkness/ seeing other cg.s in action etc) smells ( smoke, staleness, stench, ) , feeling ( hopelessness, shame, guilt, desperation, anxiety,…[Read more]

    • Tara, I totally agree with this. I recently changed jobs and cashed out my retirement and now all that money is gone thanks to that horrible place. I need to focus on all the money that place has taken from me instead of thinking I can win it all back.

I’m holding onto negative associations with casinos. If there is a trigger I then remember things like: sickness nausea, headache, darkness, smoke clouds, crying, depression, hopelessness, shortness of breath, heartache, poverty, racing heart, heart stabbing pain, cramps in my feet and legs at night, insomnia, nightmares, lies, unclear thinking,…[Read more]

Have you ever wanted to change the ending of a movie? How much power do you have to do that? With compulsive gambling it’s about the same odds of changing the result of our gambling. Now we can write an entirely ‘new’ script for a newly evolving life.

When you reach the point where you are ready to change, seize the day/ seize the moment. Grab the rope of hope and don’t let go. There are plenty of other things to let go of, but HOPE, this is something we embrace.

I have an expensive espresso latte habit; it seems that it helps me to cope. I’ve bought extra grocery items a few too many times. I’ve eaten out a couple times. I drove to a near by city , wasting gas and doing next to nothing except killing time. I don’t like to ‘spend’ money when there is not much coming in. *But what a huge difference ,…[Read more]

CODA or codependents anon. can be a recovery enhancing add on to compulsive gamblers. More often than not codependency is intertwined with other addictions.
