Sorry you had a slip. These things happen. I feel it’s part of the learning curve when in gambling (or any other addiction.) Personally I tried to use the experience to build a stronger recovery the next time. Have you attended Gamblers Anonymous or sought counselling. Please check what is available in your state or province. Some places offer…[Read more]

Great idea to restart the Friday meetings. Your topics are really thought provoking. I feel that, I, as a compulsive gambler benefitted from being provided to ideas that kept my mind working. When at meetings or over coffee with my sponsor people made sure that I had “food for thought.” It kept my enquiring mind busy.

Welcome to Gamtalk. Yes, there is a way to control gambling behaviours and it involves avoiding any kind of gambling one day at a time. It is a lot of hard work but worth every minute of time spent on recovery. If you are employed, it is usually easy to do financial planning. The financial component can be the easiest to fix. Depending on where…[Read more]

It’s great that you have recognized a potential problem for you with your gambling. The “hope” of winning back losses pulls a gambler back to the action. A certain percentage of compulsive gamblers will have a heck of a time understanding that fact. It seems, to me, that you understand what is happening, that is part of the battle. I suggest that…[Read more]

Thank you for contacting Gamtalk. Our participants may be able to give you some information. We also suggest that you contact Gamanon. They are on the internet. They offer support to people who are affected by someone else’s gambling. Depending on where you live, there also may be public health services or counselling agencies who also have…[Read more]

I visited my childhood home yesterday. Toured the area with my siblings and brother in law. I was so fortunate to have spent my early years there. Most of the houses I lived in are still there. It is remarkable that they have survived, but also a testament to the quality of construction techniques of the 1890s. This trip would not have been…[Read more]

It’s amazing that in early recovery my thoughts were really raw and angry. As I progressed farther into my journey, I mellowed and became less combative. That helped in my recovery.

Informational as opposed to clinical perhaps? I know I can only carry my recovery to perhaps help others.

Welcome. There are many resources on this website that can offer suggestions on stopping gambling. Please check the treatment and support sections. The chat rooms are open, but sometimes it takes several visits to find someone to chat with as we are all in different time zones. There are live meetings on Monday and Friday, times vary due to the…[Read more]

I found that the “hiding it” portion of my gambling was exhausting. No matter how hard I tried to hide, someone always knew and chose not to mention it. Either they didn’t want to approach me about it or didn’t care because they had their own issues. I now recognize the tunnel vision bits in my behaviours and take positive actions to derail the…[Read more]

When I accepted that I had a gambling problem, I figured I could deal with it as I had managed most of my life, by myself. I joined Gamblers Anonymous as a group had recently opened up in my community. The group had been started by AA members who were getting the same feelings from gambling as from alcohol. I recognized in them some of the…[Read more]

    • I commend you for your self-insight. The most difficult part for me wasn’t admitting I had gambling sickness, but hiding it from everyone. I believe part of a gambling sufferer’s character includes, not so much denial, but ‘flying under the radar’ ; a trait we carry into other areas of our lives as well. Naturally private and secretive, I…[Read more]

From my experience in recovery, I developed little irritating (to some) habits to remind me that I can’t gamble for anything. I still get $5 when I go to the bank. That means I don’t carry $20. It is less of a trigger for me.

Now that I’ve discovered how comments work my experience here is a bit better off. I was starting to doubt myself and that’s not healthy!

That’s the problem. I made stuff up by compounding my troubles.

I think it’s great that as I repeatedly read and share about the 12 Step program that I participate in, things in life become clearer in my recovery. Also getting into the habit of going to meetings also helped my recovery and gave me a routine to follow. I made sure that if I was travelling, I would find a GA meeting wherever I was.
