June 26 Reflection for the Day

How many of us would presume to announce, “Well, I’m on my way to licking the gambling habit. What more can I want, or do? I’m fine just the way I am.” Experience has taught us that the price of such smug complacency – or, more politely, self-satisfaction – is an inevitable backslide, punctuated sooner or later by a…[Read more]

    • I like this. So basically we are either evolving/changing for better or we are deteriorating. There’s no in between so we all have to make a choice. I choose to evolve and change today.

About 1% of people who come to a quitting forum are totally done with their habit. They will work 24 hours a day to fight it. They will read books, and articles, take notes, fill up journals, pray, and no matter how much it takes, they will do it.

But… most of us make up the 99% for a long time. We try a few new things to fight back, and then…[Read more]

    • I loved your post and thank you for taking the time to write it. I love the part about knowing that it is going to ruin your week month etc. That’s so true I go knowing I will be sick for a long time after wasting away everything.

      • Hi Jodi,
I was always sick after. It takes a lot of change before we learn to be sick (aware) during temptation. But you can learn that skill.

      • DURR IF YOU REALLY “BELIEVE” IN WHAT YOU WRITE, I WOULDN’T LET ANYONE influence what I/you have to say. I’ve made it perfectly clear I don’t agree.. I have given folks an alternative that I know works. By not continuing your writings you are solidifying my observations/position. Don’t do that. Keep writing, One Day I truly hope you find your way…[Read more]

JUNE 25 Reflection for the Day

If ever I come to the complacent conclusion that I don’t need the Gamblers Anonymous Program any longer, let me quickly remind myself that it can do far more than carry me through the anguish of living in the bondage of addiction. Let me further remind myself that I can make even greater strides in fulfilling…[Read more]

JUNE 24 Reflection for the Day

The primary purpose of the Gamblers Anonymous Program is freedom from compulsive gambling; without that freedom we have nothing. But that doesn’t mean I can say, for example, “Compulsive gambling is my only concern. Except for that, I’m really a super person, so give me freedom from gambling, and I’ve got it made.”…[Read more]

    FELLOW GAMBLER….

    Fellow gambler take my hand

I am your friend, i understand

I’ve known your guilt, your shame remorse

I borne the burden of your cross

I’ve found a friend who offered ease

he suffered too, with this disease

Although he had no magic cure

he showed me how we could endure

We walked together side by side

    we spoke of things…[Read more]

    Good Morning Folks
I read a message today from Hazelden Thought for the Day that reminded me of a saying I have heard for many years at the Gamblers Anonymous meetings I have attended. ” We are only as sick as our secrets. ”
For me once I started my recovery and shared my secrets did my life start to improve and the weight of having to remember…[Read more]

JUNE 23 Reflection for the Day

Complacency is my enemy, easy to recognize in others, but difficult to identify and accept in myself. Complacency simply means being sure we’re right – taking it for granted that we couldn’t possibly be wrong. It means, moreover, judging others by what we think is right. It blocks out understanding and kindness, and…[Read more]

Is this the area to ask dr wood? If so dr wood is there medication to help with gambling addiction and what is it?

    • The medication that I take is called Gamblers Anonymous. Its a proven program that will work for ANYBODY who is willing to put in the required effort. There are no magic pills. Entirely up to you. But the benefits can be outstanding.

    I need some help

    • Hi jodi71,
Depending on where you are located? There are options for treatment for gambling addiction, and yes, some do use medication-assisted therapy to help diminish and aid with the cravings and urges. For example, when I was entered into treatment by way of my suicide attempt, I was in crisis, after a few days becoming stable and better I…[Read more]

JUNE 21 Reflection for the Day

“Direct” is a key word in the Ninth Step. There are times, unfortunately, when many of us are hopeful that indirect amends will suffice, sparing us the pain and supposed humiliation of approaching people in person and telling them of our wrongs. This is evasion and will never give us a true sense of breaking with…[Read more]

JUNE 20 Reflection for the Day

When we take the Ninth Step, we must be willing to be absolutely honest. Obviously, though, indiscriminate “absolute honesty” would blow the roof off many a house and entirely destroy some relationships. We must hold nothing back through deceit and pride; we may need to hold something back through discretion and…[Read more]

JUNE 19 Reflection for the Day

The Gamblers Anonymous Program teaches us that only one consideration should qualify our desire to completely disclose the damage we’ve done. And that’s where a full revelation would seriously harm the one to whom we’re making amends – or, just as important, others close to that person. We can hardly unload a d…[Read more]

    Quitting Addiction Exercises
One of the biggest keys to quitting addiction is to know (and have organized) what exercises you need to do to help in quitting gambling. On this web site and on many others there are mental exercises you can do. But to simply read about them and then to do them for a few days is not the answer. The day one process…[Read more]

JUNE 18 Reflection for the Day

I believe today that I have a right to make spiritual progress. I have a right to be emotionally mature. I have a right to take pleasure in my own company, and that makes me more pleasant to be with. I also have a right to become willing – deeply willing, entirely willing – to make amends to all those I’ve harmed.…[Read more]

June 16 Reflection for the Day

The Ninth Step of the Gamblers Anonymous Program is: “Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. “To make restitution for the wrongs we’ve done can be extremely difficult, to say the least ;if nothing else, it deflates our egos and batters our pride. Yet…[Read more]

June 15 Reflection for the Day

Learning how to live in peace and partnership – with all men and women – is a fascinating and often very moving adventure. But each of us in Gamblers Anonymous has found that we’re not able to make much headway in our new adventure of living until we first take the time to make an accurate and unsparing survey of…[Read more]

  • Hello Group,
For those who already know me, I run a gambling recovery website for the advocacy work I do with helping those who struggle with problem gambling or need support with maintaining recovery from it. June 13 Reflection for the Day

I don’t believe that the Gamblers Anonymous Program and the Twelve Steps work because I read it in a book, or because I hear other people say so. I believe it because I see other people recovering and because I know that I, too, am recovering. No longer do I believe that I am “helpless and hopeless.” When I see the…[Read more]
